Introducing our upcoming release: “Nextcloud Hub 25 Autumn”

The landing page for our upcoming Nextcloud Hub release is now live!

On September 27, 2025, at 10AM (CEST), we will present the latest Nextcloud Hub live from the Nextcloud Community Conference in Berlin, Germany.

And you can be part of it, too, by signing up for the online launch!

While you’re registering, you might notice that our next release isn’t named Nextcloud Hub 11, which might have been what you expected after the latest release of Nextcloud Hub 10.

Why did we choose a different name?

What’s in a name?

Naming is more than labeling! It is part of a user experience and should feel human.

In 2020, we introduced Nextcloud Hub, moving from a file sync and share to a full collaboration platform. We started a new numbering, and now, five years later, we were about to hit 11. It made us reflect on what version numbers really mean once they get bigger. Going from version 1 to version 2 seems much bigger than going from version 10 to version 11.

But, in reality, the changes in releases today are more numerous than ever before!

So we had to find a scheme that would scale better.

Years seems obvious, but with three releases, the numbering quickly gets awkward. A name like 2025.1 and 2025.2 sound like minor releases. If we write it as a year.month scheme, such as in Ubuntu, it seems even smaller, and code names are funny but you’re always trying to puzzle out if Trixy or Forky came first. Then we thought of the seasons!

The Nextcloud Hub 25 Autumn release: It’s the season for fun

Everybody has their favorite season. They reflect cycles of change, growth, and renewal — much like software development. So, we opted for seasons.

We’re aware that, if you are on the southern half of the planet, December means sunshine. Santa’s more likely to need sunscreen than a sleigh. The timing may differ, but the cycle of seasons remains the same.
