Design for your future project can take as little as weeks. However, initial assessment of your current platform is very important in an earlier stage and may take several weeks or months depending on the number of users, number of use cases and apps and amount of teams and data.
Yes, you can move part of your tools and keep using others in a hybrid set-up. For example, you can keep using Microsoft Office, but move other features, like team chat and meetings, to Nextcloud Talk. Or, set an existing SharePoint to read-only and make it accessible for team members within Nextcloud Files. Then, integrate Nextcloud files as storage into Microsoft Teams. Your teams can access and share legacy SharePoint data as well as work intuitively together on new documents from one place. User impact is minimal while offering a big improvement to resilience and compliance.
Nextcloud has built in user management. You can provide users from within Nextcloud itself, and/or through one or more connected external user directory providers like Active Directory (AD), including AzureAD, LDAP, the user directory solution Nubus from our partner Univention, authentication mechanisms like SSO/SAML and many other solutions. While it is possible for Nextcloud to provide user directory functionality via OIDC to third party applications, Nextcloud is not designed to be a primary user directory at scale.
