Munich / Germany: Data is the new oil – out of convenience, Europe has become unilaterally dependent on non-European IT providers. Now, the global political situation with trade conflicts, erratic decisions and the breaking-up of partnerships that have lasted for decades is causing great uncertainty about the reliability of digital collaboration tools provided by dominant tech giants.
In response to a threefold increase in demand, Nextcloud is introducing Talk “Munich”, the latest version of its video call and chat platform to provide organisations with secure and reliable communications and facilitate migration from US cloud platforms. Talk can be hosted in an organisation’s private cloud, making them independent of third party decisions and significantly increasing their resilience.
„Today, no one can rule out the possibility that the availability of digital platforms will be used as a political bargaining chip. Businesses and governments need to act now to protect themselves from global political knee-jerk reactions. We have taken up this challenge and focused on making Talk users less dependent on international events”, says Frank Karlitschek, CEO of Nextcloud.
The market expresses a desire for improvements that make it easier to switch from familiar US platforms to Nextcloud. This update therefore focussed on improving usability and integration capabilities. Some of the most important updates include:
Nextcloud Talk is the only comprehensive collaboration platform that can be run completely autonomous offering users the ability to run the software in an entirely sovereign and reliable environment to maintain full control of their data, regardless of what third parties decide. Unlike any of its competitors, Talk and its AI capabilities, can be hosted in an organisation’s own private cloud, even air-gapped, and is the fully open source, making it interoperable and protecting vendor lock-in.
“As a governmental organisation, we not only have the highest requirements in terms of digital sovereignty, information security and resilience when selecting our ICT solutions, but also want to work with a cost-effective, user-friendly and modern platform. Nextcloud met all these criteria and enables us to deploy everything on-premises. If you take digital sovereignty really seriously, you can realise it with European solutions today”, says Florian Zinnagl, Chief Information Security Officer of the Federal Ministry for Economy, Energy and Tourism in Austria.
Organisations in the private and public sectors around the world are looking to Europe for software solutions in a time of uncertainty. In the first five months of 2025, demand for Nextcloud has more than tripled. „We are seeing the greatest demand for a secure and reliable collaboration platform from European countries. But we are also seeing a significant increase in global inquiries, for example from Canada, Latin America and even the US. Many of them are specifically asking for a migration from their Microsoft or Google platform“, says Frank Karlitschek.
