Decentralization through blockchain is all the rage, and a big player in the decentralized storage space is Storj Labs. Its open source code is designed to be easy to integrate as storage layer in other projects and that is precisely what is happening. Nextcloud users will be able to use Storj’s upcoming V3 data storage network.
During a keynote at the Open Source Summit in Vancouver, Storj Labs announced its Open Source Partner Program together with Confluent, Couchbase, FileZilla, InfluxData, MariaDB, Minio, MongoDB, Pydio, Zenko and of course Nextcloud.
Users will be able to pick Storj as storage option, delivering a cheap, efficient and globally distributed data storage option to users. The Storj Network uses client-side encryption so Nextcloud server owners can trust that only they can access their files. While it offers very low pricing, a great opportunity for cold storage like backups, performance of the network is nothing to sneeze at: Streaming of 4K video is certainly possible, making it a viable option for primary storage in Nextcloud!

Storj Labs provides secure distributed cloud storage that gives customers control over their data. The company’s open-source cloud storage platform utilizes spare disk drive space shared by storage node operators, to create a secure network for developers, operations teams, companies and others in need of secure cloud storage. Using client-side encryption, the Storj network ensures that data can only be accessed by the data owners. Compared to many traditional cloud storage approaches, the distributed architecture of the Storj network protects against attacks, improves reliability and enhances performance.
In 2016, the company completed a $30M token sale for its ERC-20 token STORJ. These tokens can be used on the Storj network to purchase services and are also used to pay farmers, who run more than 150,000 storage nodes with over 150PB of capacity in more than 200 countries and territories.
