The Nextcloud Conference is always a great time for contributors, as they can discuss their latest projects and share insights with their fellow Nextclouders. We organize two rounds of lightning talks to give them space to do so during the weekend, during which we invite all our contributors, app maintainers and partners to give a 5 minutes preview of what they have been doing in the course of the last year, and what comes next. This year has been a great track, as over two dozen App maintainers and third party contributors have presented their projects. In the afternoon we held well attended workshops on subjects like Docker containers or writing your first Nextcloud app but those were not recorded – you’ll have to join us next year, August 23-30 at the TU Berlin, to be a part of that!
Keynotes and lightning talks
We started each day with a keynote to set the tone for the day. On Saturday, we opened with an inspiring keynote from Tristan Nitot, Mozilla Europe co-founder and former President about surveillance in the digital age. Sunday Moodle founder & Moodle PTY LTD CEO Martin Dougiamas talked us through the story of Moodle but also challenged us to take a step back and look at the big picture of what we do.
Lightning talks are short sessions aiming at bringing the audience in only one track. They first allow to connect faces and topics: knowing who is doing what helps start the discussion! They are also a good option timewise, as 5 minutes encourage people to go straight to the point: no lengthy presentations, no people leaving the room because they’re not interested in the topic. Finally, they are a nice occasion to advertise workshops or more in-depth discussions later in the day to bring people together around a specific topic!
Here is an overview of what was discussed on Saturday:
