How and why to code open source at the Nextcloud Community Conference

Getting involved in open source can be life-changing for your career, your skills, and the community you join.

  • It’s fun and a great learning opportunity! You’ll collaborate with talented people, work on real-world projects, and see your code make an impact.
  • It looks fantastic on your resume. Open source experience stands out to employers and demonstrates initiative, collaboration, and technical skills.
  • Open source companies are incredible places to work. They’re dynamic, creative, and built on values of transparency and freedom.

But let’s be honest: getting started can feel overwhelming.

That’s why face-to-face events like the Nextcloud Community Conference are the perfect place to begin. You’ll meet experienced contributors ready to guide you, learn hands-on, and connect with others who are just starting out too.

Every year, Nextcloud welcomes hundreds of new contributors, and we’d love to help you become one of them.
All you need is curiosity and a bit of coding experience — the programming language doesn’t matter!

Here are a few sessions designed to help you take your first steps into open source:

  • Panel: How to contribute to Nextcloud — Hear directly from active contributors about how they got started and their best tips for newcomers.
  • Nextcloud Forums: Join and contribute — Discover how answering questions and guiding others in the forums can grow your skills and benefit the community.
  • Develop your first ExApp for Nextcloud — A hands-on session where you’ll set up a local development environment and build your very first ExApp using Python.
