Homeschooling and home office just became compliant with privacy regulations and easy: Nextcloud, IONOS and the managed service provider Viakom today make available a collaboration solution that enables GDPR-compliant and secure collaboration. The offer is aimed in particular at schools, authorities and small and medium-sized companies. The solution is based on the Nextcloud Hub application, including all the functions that users expect from a modern collaboration platform: telephony, chat and video conferencing system, collaborative document processing, a mail server and client as well as task and calendar management. The solution can be operated via easy mobile, desktop and web interfaces. It is hosted in the German IONOS data centers and distributed and administered by Viakom.

The GDPR-compliant, fully managed solution can be implemented within 24 hours. In contrast to foreign SaaS solutions, thanks to the cooperation of three German companies, users have no data protection issues and data leaks to worry about.

Corona crisis leads to rash decisions

“Because of the corona crisis, many organizations are forced to rapidly introduce collaboration tools without first subjecting them to risk analysis. This leads to major problems with data sovereignty – especially in the past few weeks, this has become increasingly apparent in the media. It is important to bring a European alternative to the market, ”says Frank Karlitschek, CEO of Nextcloud. In the past, there have been increasing voices pointing to the legal risks for schools, authorities and companies when using non-European solutions. In summer 2019, the Hesse State Data Protection Officer noted the use of the well-known US cloud solutions in schools is not GDPR compliant. The data protection officer of Baden-Württemberg also warned against their use and recommended the use of Nextcloud and other open source solutions.

Online collaboration cannot be replaced in a crisis – neither can data protection

Covid-19 has fundamentally changed the nature of work in many organizations. “Public institutions, schools and companies will have to deal with being constantly online and have to offer cloud services to their users,” says Karlitschek. Public cloud services have been a temporary solution for many, bringing risks and limits. Now it’s up to the organizations to quickly find and deploy more secure, locally hosted and managed solutions.

The offer is free during a 30-day trial period. After that there are monthly costs of 9.50 euros per user. Discounted tariffs are offered for educational institutions and authorities.
