Just like that, the Nextcloud Conference has come to a close. It’s been an exciting weekend and we can’t wait to share it with you!

Today was the second and final day of the conference and we hope it was a great experience for all who attended. If you missed it, sit back and relax for an overview of day 2 with all the highlights from our 2 keynote speakers, 14 lightning talks, 3 panelists and much more.

Nextcloud Conference Program 2023

Katrin Fritsch morning keynote: A just and green internet for all

Nextcloud conference katrin

To kick off the 2nd day of the Nextcloud Conference, we welcomed Katrin Fritsch to the stage. Katrin is a tech and climate researcher and consultant who advocates for an open internet that’s sustainable yet embraces human creativity.

In her talk, she examined the increasing amount of CO2 emissions that come from worldwide Internet usage and what that means for us today. In order to counteract this, she brought up the Consumption, Intensity and Direction model: Consumption – reduce how much tech we use; Intensity- make tech in a less harmful way and; Direction worldview is accelerating. We need to start asking ourselves questions about which direction we want to take in the future, as efficiency ultimately impacts usage and thus affects the climate.

She also described the Internet today as becoming a brittle monoculture, fit of just seven companies that dominate the industry. She exclaimed the need for people to first focus on changing this dynamic of power.

Technologists focus on energy
when we should look at power.

Katrin encouraged the audience to check out thegreenwebfoundation.org to learn more.

A morning of Lightning Talks!

The morning of Day 2, we had a whopping 14 Lightning Talks!

These 5 minute talks are speedy yet insightful bursts of information on a wide range of topics. From getting inspired by Robert Mizen’s talk about FOSS and the future to Kate Döen’s talk on using OpenAPI for API documentation, there was lots to learn this year.

Keynote with Simon Phipps

It was such a privilege to have Simon Phipps speak at the Nextcloud Conference this year. His wealth of knowledge in open source and experience as a consultant to companies and governments including the European Commission make him an excellent advocate and inspiration to us all.

In his talk, Simon discusses the emerging Fourth Sector. Being involved in the Open Source Initiative (OCS) as its president for the last 15 years has helped in his awareness of the Fourth Sector as it pertains to the direction and future of this piece of society.

Learn more about Simon and a more detailed explanation on his opinion of the Fourth Sector here.

Panel session: How to contribute?

Do you want to get involved in open source but don’t know where to start? Take the advice from our panelists: Marcel Scherello – Sales Engineer at Nextcloud, James Sunquist – avid Nextcloud contributor and Nimisha Vijay – UX Designer at Nextcloud. This afternoon, they engaged in an insightful discussion based on their own contribution journey’s.

All our panelists got involved with open source and Nextcloud in different ways, but what remains the same is that it all started with a personal need. For instance, Marcel was looking for an audio system for his children that worked for their family. James needed a way to stay in touch with his family who is living far away, and open source opened doors for them. Overall, they recommend to ask yourself what you need, or what others around you need, and just get started. You can’t get involved without just pressing go, so whatever passions you may have, then bring them to the open source world.

Panel session Nextcloud conf day 2

That’s a wrap!

We’d like to thank all our speakers and participants who joined us at this event and made it the success that it was.

Our conference was live all day Saturday and Sunday, and now you can skip to any part you’d like to see on video.

Max Schrems Keynote: The EU-US dynamic on data privacy today

For our first keynote, Max Schrems hit the stage. As an Austrian lawyer with expertise on EU and US data privacy law, he took the audience through the intricacies of the new data privacy framework. With his experience fighting against previous data privacy laws in the European Court of Justice, the EU-US Privacy Shield and the Transatlantic Data Privacy Framework, he brought valuable insight about what actually goes on behind the scenes.

Panel session Trust, Transparency, Together

Following the keynote, Max was joined on stage by Katrin Fritsch, tech & climate researcher & consultant and Daphne Muller, Manager of Ecosystems & Alliances at Nextcloud as well as a privacy researcher.

Nextcloud Marketing Manager of North America, Brent Gervais started the talk with what “Trust, Transparency, Together” meant for each panelist in their area of expertise. For instance, Katrin Fritsch aligned “transparency” with the climate crisis and how government and companies are handling the CO2 emissions produced from machines creating AI.

Lightning Talks

Today, we had 9 Lightning Talks – our special 5 minute talks – from Nextclouders, developers and contributors about a variety of topics.

High performing Nextcloud apps

For instance, Varun Patil talked about his experience building high performing Nextcloud apps like his app Memories, a community maintained photo manager for Nextcloud.

UX design process

In another lightning talk by Clementine, UX Designer at Arawa, a Nextcloud partner, she talked about the benefits of usability testing.

“UX design is important because it allows us to find the pain points and understand what users struggle with, in order to determine where issues are coming from and how to solve them.”

The fascinating keynote by Simon Phipps at the Nextcloud Conference 2023

Simon is a web and open source advocate often writing about key topics in Free and Open Source Software or FOSS.

Nextcloud-Conference-2023-speaker-Simon-Phipps

Today, we’ve asked him a few questions:

Simon, you’ve done hard core development, management, legal and arguably philosophical writing and if I dare say so, you seem to like to define things. So may I challenge you to define your recent activities?

My work currently aims to protect and develop the digital rights of individuals within democracies. I do that at OSI where I have been intervening around the European Commission’s proposed Cyber Resilience Act, at AlmaLinux OS Foundation where I have been helping them develop community-led governance, as part of the UK’s Open Standards Board and in a few other contexts

You’ve been involved in defining open source for a long time. And your various writings suggest you care deeply about personal freedoms and privacy. What would you say is the relation between privacy and open source?

I like to define open source as software that respects and enables the self-sovereignty of each individual. So I regard open source first as a key enabler for those wishing to build software that embodies self-sovereignty, and further as a critical indicator of an intent to accommodate self-sovereignty. When people abridge software freedom they are frequently careless of the rights of the users of their software. Open source is no guarantee – there are plenty of companies who enjoy the benefits of software freedom without extending them to their customers – but a willingness to lock anyone out  (or in!) is a red flag.

You want to talk about the Fourth Sector, creators, if I may crudely summarize who they are. What made you think and write on this subject?

Legislators conveniently divide society into the commercial sector, the labour sector and the consumer sector. That’s a natural consequence of the legacy of the industrial revolution. But with the advent of the Internet, people started connecting directly to each other, and that in turn allowed some to play roles that spanned all three of those sectors. The people and civil groupings who dare to engage socially and commercially across the prior three sectors are what I and others term the Fourth Sector. As I have engaged more and more with legislators I have realised they are failing to consider, much less consult, fourth sector actors and the activities they conduct, such as open source software. I’ll be explaining these ideas in more depth at the conference.

About Simon Phipps

Simon Phipps is known for his time at Sun Microsystems, where he took over leadership of Sun’s open source program and ran one of the first OSPOs. During this time in the 2000s, most of Sun’s core software was released under open source licenses, including Solaris and Java (which he had previously worked on co-establishing IBM’s Java business in the 1990s). When Sun was broken up in 2010, he was freed to focus purely on open source and dedicated time to re-imagining the Open Source Initiative (OSI) – the non-profit organization that acts as a steward of the canonical list of open source licenses and the Open Source Definition. Today Simon leads OSI’s work educating European policymakers about the needs of the open source community. Learn more here.

💙 Are you passionate about open source?

💙 Do you want share an update about developments in Nextcloud?

💙 Passionate about privacy-focused projects?

These are just a few questions to ask yourself that could be great speaking topics!

Be a speaker at Nextcloud Conference

We are looking for sessions that give an insight into our ecosystem and what’s happening! Think of an update about developments in a Nextcloud application, the presentation of a privacy-focused project, a piece of hardware with Nextcloud, and the development status of a feature. Anything that is interesting and useful for people in the Nextcloud community will be considered.

The deadline for the Call for speakers is  August 18th. If your talk is accepted, you’ll receive a confirmation from us. After that, you have time until the  4th of September to submit a draft of your slides!

You have the option to either give a 5-minute ‘lightning talk’ or lead 30 to 60 minutes long workshop:

  • Workshops: These are meant to be interactive learning sessions, allocated in slots of 30 or 60 minutes, examples include: Learning how to develop a Nextcloud app, building Workflows, bringing your Nextcloud app to Vue.js, and much more!
  • Lightning Talks: These are 5 minutes talks on many different topics, like the status of a Nextcloud app or a presentation of a privacy-focused project, and more!

Proposal deadline: August 18th

Proposals FAQ 🗒

✔ What if I am not a public speaker?

Bear in mind that the talks are meant to be low-key and low-stress. We encourage and welcome anyone to present and just want to provide you a cool platform to share what you love! The conference team is happy to help prep you and practice if you’re worried about anything.

✔ When will I hear back if my proposal was accepted?

We will get back to you as soon as possible. If your proposal is accepted, you’ll receive an email from us! Note that sometimes we receive a lot of talk proposals, so then we have to select them based on the first come, first serve model. Nevertheless, we accept most proposals that are sent in so your chances are high.

✔ Do I have to prepare anything?

Yes. For both lightning talks and workshops, you will have to submit a draft of your slides for us to approve. The deadline for slide submission is September 4th.

✔ Does it need to be memorized?

No. Prepare your talk how you see fit! If you prefer to memorize it, create note cards, or have a word-for-word copy to read from, all options are acceptable.
