About Schleswig-Holstein

Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost state in Germany. Part of the State Chancellery of Schleswig-Holstein is the Central IT-Management department. They are responsible for the provision and operation of the centralized IT infrastructure for the whole state administration. They’re made up of 25,000 employees – one including Felix Gebauer, the Program Lead and Project Manager for the transition to Open-Source Software. He is responsible for the successful implementation of Schleswig-Holstein’s open source strategy. It’s his job to introduce Nextcloud as the new key collaboration platform to the state administration and ensure its roll-out of Nextcloud.

How Nextcloud is integral to Schleswig-Holstein’s open source strategy

In Felix’s talk, he will introduce Schleswig-Holstein’s open-source strategy and get into how Nextcloud fits into this strategy. He will explain how the Schleswig-Holstein state administration introduced Nextcloud, what were and are the biggest challenges, and what we have planned as further developments for Nextcloud, focusing on introducing AI solutions.

«The main reasons for choosing Nextcloud were the wide distribution of Nextcloud especially in public administration, Nextcloud’s strong and active community, and the wide range of different collaboration features within Nextcloud which provide solutions for many use cases in Schleswig-Holstein’s state administration.»

Felix Gebauer, Program Lead and Project Manager for the transition to Open-Source Software in the Schleswig-Holstein

Building a digitally sovereign AI for the public sector

As part of the AI strategy of the German state, they are collaborating with Nextcloud to create a generative language model for the state administration that is adapted to the specifics of administrative texts. Minister of Digitization and Head of the State Chancellery Dirk Schrödter backs the collaboration in a statement:

«In the future, we will make AI services available to colleagues in the state administration directly at the workplace. We want to drive the development of digitally sovereign and open solutions in addition to the use of existing AI services. Because, the administration of the future will work in an automated, algortihmized, cloudified and data-based way. To make this vision of the future a reality, we must provide the appropriate tools. This also creates value and jobs in our domestic digital economy.»

Dirk Schrödter, Minister of Digitization and Head of the State Chancellery

Enhancing digital sovereignty: XWiki SAS and Nextcloud forge closer ties https://nextcloud.com/es/blog/enhancing-digital-sovereignty-xwiki-sas-and-nextcloud-forge-closer-ties/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 10:00:00 +0000 https://nextcloud.com/?p=202209 Learn about the collaboration between XWiki SAS and Nextcloud as these two open-source, privacy friendly companies forge closer ties through an investment and reseller agreement.

The post Enhancing digital sovereignty: XWiki SAS and Nextcloud forge closer ties appeared first on Nextcloud.

]]>
Nextcloud has been collaborating with XWiki over the last year, developing integrations that help users manage their internal information in XWiki, CryptPad and Nextcloud. To foster a stronger partnership with this fellow European, open-source company, Nextcloud founder and CEO Frank Karlitschek has made a symbolic investment in XWiki SAS.Moreover, Nextcloud GmbH and XWiki SAS have signed a mutual resellers’ agreement to provide their customers an easy way to purchase a complete solution from either vendor. Together, the two projects will continue to push against the dominant tech giants that try to gain control over the data of European businesses, organizations, and citizens.

Building on shared values

Nextcloud builds digitally sovereign, privacy respecting collaboration software in an open, transparent way. XWiki SAS follows the same model, aiming to create software that matters and makes a difference. Both XWiki SAS and Nextcloud advocate for the empowerment of individuals and organizations to reclaim their digital sovereignty through collaborative, transparent, and fully open-source platforms.

A recent conversation between Frank and Ludovic culminated in December 2023 with a modest investment by Frank in XWiki SAS, symbolizing a deepening of our business relationship. This fits with the trend of the growing relation between XWiki SAS and Nextcloud on some customer projects, in several formal alliances, but also in the political space with both organizations pushing together for an open and free European market. A good example here is XWiki’s support for Nextcloud’s antitrust complaint about Microsoft to the European Union.

What this means for the Nextcloud community

The XWiki and Nextcloud software are both rooted in community-driven open-source development and are committed to maintaining free, independent, and organically grown communities and products. Rejecting venture capital backing, we both prioritize long-term sustainability and community-building over short-term gains.

In alliance with Nextcloud, we share a common ethos centered on privacy and data control and we plan on working even closer together in the following years. This small investment is on one hand a sign of growing trust and partnership, and on another hand marks for us a significant step towards realizing our shared vision of digitally sovereign collaborative solutions in Europe. At the same time, both companies will continue to work independently as they did until now.

— Ludovic Dubost, Founder and CEO of XWiki SAS and CryptPad_

XWiki has been maturing for many years into the robust and versatile knowledge management platform that it is today. We have been cooperating in various areas for some time now, and I am glad that I am able to formalize our ties a little further with this investment.

— Frank Karlitschek, Founder and CEO of Nextcloud_

What’s next?

We believe there is a bright future for digitally sovereign collaboration solutions in Europe and this is a step forward in bringing two leading projects in this space closer together. Join us on the road towards a more digitally sovereign future by following XWiki SAS on Mastodon, LinkedInXFacebook, or through their newsletter or read their blog about our collaboration. Meanwhile, you ca find Nextcloud on Mastodon, LinkedInXFacebookInstagram, or follow our newsletter.

In order to provide a strong enterprise user experience, Nextcloud offers theming and branding capabilities for both servers and clients. The theming and branding can be distributed using our deployment options for both desktop and mobile platforms.

Integrated theming

Our integrated theming app offers a quick and user-friendly method to customize your Nextcloud server’s appearance. It allows you to configure your organization’s logo, color palette, name and key URLs, including your privacy policy and imprint.

Additionally, the Nextcloud mobile apps are designed to automatically sync with your server’s theme. This means they adopt the server’s color scheme and display your customized logo and background, ensuring a consistent and branded user experience across all platforms.

  • Logo, colors, login graphics and name
  • Add custom links for privacy policy, imprint and terms of service
  • Default / example files every user gets on first login can be modified

This means end-users can bypass the server selection step and directly enter their login details, streamlining their access process and enhancing overall user efficiency.

Theming versus Branding

In Nextcloud, theming and branding are distinct yet complementary features that enhance user experience and your corporate identity. While often used interchangeably, they serve unique functions.

Theming

Nextcloud Hub’s built-in theming app is the recommended approach for customizing the look and feel of your server’s interface. This app ensures compatibility with Web User Interface changes and allows for easy customizations. You can adjust visual elements like the logo, color scheme, organization’s name, and essential URLs such as privacy policies and imprints. The Web User Interface also allows tailoring the color and logos in various emails sent by Nextcloud (e.g., share information, activities, welcome emails).

Theming is all about giving a personalized touch to your Nextcloud server, aligning it visually with your organization’s aesthetic and ensuring a cohesive brand experience across all user touchpoints.

Branding

Going a step further, Nextcloud’s branding capabilities offer a deeper level of customization. Branding involves incorporating custom visual assets like logos and icons into the client interface, creating a custom help page, and implementing pre-configured settings for seamless integration within your organization. This ensures that when users access Nextcloud, they are immediately met with an interface that reflects your organization’s identity, bypassing the need to select a server and entering login credentials directly.

Branded clients replace the standard Nextcloud logo and name in the app drawer with your organization’s branding, offering a more tailored experience.

Overall, branding in Nextcloud extends beyond the visual appeal, providing an experience that feels like an integral part of your organization. It supports a wide range of platforms including Android, iOS and desktop environments like Linux, Mac and Windows.

Available as part of our Standard and Premium subscriptions, branding elevates the user experience to a level where Nextcloud Hub not only functions but also feels like an extension of your organization’s corporate style.

Deployment and device management

Nextcloud simplifies the deployment process for desktop and mobile platforms, offering robust solutions tailored to organizational needs.

For desktops, we utilize the Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI), providing branded desktop client packages that facilitate deployment across large-scale environments.

Nextcloud extends its capabilities to mobile platforms through comprehensive Mobile Device Management (MDM) support. This enables management and deployment of mobile applications.

All these deployment technologies are available through our subscription plans. This ensures that organizations of all sizes have access to the tools they need for efficient deployment and management of Nextcloud branding services.
