OVHcloud at Enterprise Day

OVHcloud is a returning sponsor of Nextcloud Enterprise Day – Nextcloud’s annual enterprise event for like-minded industry professionals and decision-makers to get the most out of their Content Collaboration Platform.

By supporting Nextcloud Enterprise Day, OVHcloud reinforces its position as a cloud provider that values privacy, security, and open-source standards, offering solutions that empower organizations to maintain control over their data while leveraging the benefits of cloud technology.

At last year’s Enterprise Day 2023, OVHcloud’s CEO, Michel Paulin, underlined this ambition in his virtual speech:

For 20 years, OVHcloud has been dedicated to building an open and trusted cloud, upholding fundamental values centered on trust, data protection and innovation. Our commitment extends to partnering with entities that reflect our principles. We take immense pride in our strong partnership with Nextcloud. Sharing similar values allows us to collaboratively propose innovative solutions.”

– Michel Paulin, CEO OVHcloud

About OVHcloud

OVHcloud, a global cloud computing service provider, offers scalable and flexible web hosting, server, private and public cloud solutions for businesses, developers and individuals. With a commitment to data autonomy and transparency, OVHcloud enables efficient IT infrastructure management while advocating for privacy and innovation.

A powerful partnership

Grounded by a strong and solid technology partnership, Nextcloud and OVHcloud work on interesting joint cooperations. Nextcloud users can easily integrate dedicated AI services from OVHcloud in Hub 6 and 7 and OVHcloud clients have very simple access to install cloud services from Nextcloud on their OVHcloud infrastructure.

Since their founding, Nextcloud and OVHcloud share a plethora of shared values and the following aligned principles:

Open-source philosophy

Nextcloud is built on open-source software, allowing for transparency, flexibility, and community collaboration. Similarly, OVHcloud supports open-source initiatives, as seen in the five core values of their SMART cloud, and contributes to various open-source projects. This shared commitment to open-source values fosters innovation and empowers users and developers alike.

Data sovereignty pioneers

Both Nextcloud and OVHcloud are at the forefront of the data sovereignty vision, advocating for a world where the public sector, businesses and individuals alike have access to all their data with a high level of data security. While Nextcloud emphasizes self-hosting options, giving users more control over their data and enabling them to comply with regulations like GDPR, OVHcloud implements robust security measures across its infrastructure and data centers, ensuring the safety and privacy of customer data. We envision a world where users won’t have to worry about the interference of any extraterritorial laws like the U.S. Cloud Act that pose substantial risks to European’s personal data.

Further demonstrating our dedication to this vision, in 2021 Nextcloud filed an antitrust complaint with the European Commission about Microsoft’s anti-competitive, bundling behavior. Later that year, together with a coalition of some 30 NGOs and other European tech companies, we publicly called on the EU to take action and we haven’t stopped there.

OVHcloud also takes a firm stance on data rights, with their CEO Michel Paulin stating, “EU policymakers should have the courage and intellectual honesty to establish a sovereign cloud as well as to regulate American cloud service providers under the EU’s antitrust Digital Markets Act regulation.”

Our powerful partnership has the potential to enact change in establishing a level playing field for cloud service providers and a data-sovereign cloud for all.

GDPR compliancy

Ensuring GDPR compliance is paramount for both Nextcloud and OVHcloud as we both prioritize data security and privacy in the EU. With a strong commitment to adhering to local laws and regulations, both of our companies go the extra mile to safeguard user data within the EU.

OVHcloud’s local data centers are a testament to their dedication to compliance with GDPR requirements.

Scalability and Flexibility

Nextcloud and OVHcloud both offer scalable solutions tailored to the needs of businesses and individuals. Nextcloud can be deployed on-premises or in the cloud, accommodating various use cases and organizational sizes. OVHcloud provides scalable cloud infrastructure with options for custom configurations, enabling users to adapt their resources as their requirements evolve.

A history of alliance

While Nextcloud and OVHcloud operate in different niches within the cloud computing landscape, our shared values of data security, privacy, openness, scalability, customer focus, and innovation unite us in our mission to provide reliable and user-centric cloud solutions.

Accordingly, we partner at major events and tech conferences together like at the leading IT security event, it-sa in Nuremberg, Germany. It-sa provided us the platform to talk about our secure and sovereign cloud collaboration in a large audience of IT leaders and participants from around the world.

The Open Trusted Cloud (OTC) initiative

The Open Trusted Cloud, or OTC, program aims to build vibrant ecosystems of software publishers – SaaS and PaaS companies around an open, reversible, secure, transparent and trusted cloud. Started by OVHcloud and joined by Nextcloud in 2022, we share common values about compliance with local data regulations and data sovereignty.

The Open Trusted Cloud is an ecosystem of European software manufacturers and puts the European offer effectively in the spotlight – a structure with a common voice that conveys our messages clearly. To strengthen their position, software manufacturers should work with other European players together. By acting together, we can increase the impact and share costs.”

– Khaled Allab, director of the Open Trusted Cloud

We’re also both members of the CISPE (Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers in Europe) association, with OVHcloud being a founding member, that aims to standardize the rules for personal data protection throughout Europe. In addition, we’re both members of the German GAIA-X project, a European initiative for developing an efficient, competitive, secure and trusted data infrastructure for the European Union.

OVHcloud representing our shared vision at Enterprise Day 2024

This year, OVHcloud’s Vincent Le Fort, Sales Director Tech DACH Market, will be giving a short talk about our common vision and commitment to our customers at Nextcloud Enterprise Day.

This is a unique opportunity to learn more about our collaboration at our upcoming event and meet the OVHcloud team.

We are looking forward to sharing this day with you and celebrate our shared values.

Our new Nextcloud Podcast host, Brent Gervais, had the opportunity to sit down with Max Schrems – privacy lawyer and pioneer in the European data privacy movement – to explore some thoughts and ideas that stemmed from Max’s keynote given at the Nextcloud Conference 2023.

We explore the newly adopted Transatlantic Data Privacy Framework, it’s implications and why we all need to care and pay attention. We also touch on the 15-year debate on EU-US data transfers, surveillance law, anti-competitive behaviours in Big Tech, and the need for regulation despite the challenges presented by the process.

“If we move into this information age, and information is the new gold or the new currency, how do we distribute the rights to that information in a fair and balanced way? Different cultures and different democracies will have different answers to that.. there can be parts that are open source that allows you to move your data out into another system, which is one of your rights as an individual – your right to privacy.”
– Max Schrems

Max became known for campaigns against Facebook for its privacy violations, including violations of European privacy laws and the alleged transfer of personal data to the US National Security Agency (NSA). He is most well known for his lawsuits on the Safe Harbor agreement (Schrems I) and the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield (Schrems II).

Today he is the Founder & Honorary Chair of NOYB – European Center for Digital Rights.

The possibility of your Google account being blocked forever?

It’s more likely than it may seem.

And Google will do nothing about it.

The story of 2 mistakenly blocked Google accounts

As seen in the New York Times article, two individuals from California and Texas have been permanently blocked from their Google accounts due to a mishap with Google’s automated child abuse algorithms.

The mishap being nude children’s photos intended for a doctor’s diagnosis.

Mark, a San Francisco dad and avid user of Google products, discovered his infant son was in pain in the groin area and immediately scheduled an online emergency consultation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mark and his wife were advised by the doctor to take a photo of the affected area in advance and upload it to a medical portal. The photos were taken on his Android Smartphone and were backed up to the Google cloud. Two-days later, the Google algorithm mistook the sensitive photos of his son as child exploitation and his account was disabled.

As a former software engineer, he was familiar with similar algorithms and Mark thought that there would be someone who would intervene and he’d get his account back, no problem.

He was wrong. Even after explaining his situation in a follow-up form, Google responded that they would not return the account, with no further explanation.

In an almost identical incident, Cassio, a Houstan, Texas dad who was in the middle of buying a house, also was requested to take a photo of his sick son in an intimate area. He too took the photos for the doctor’s diagnosis on his Android phone which was synced to Google Photos, sent to his wife via Google Hangouts and ended up in the same misconstrued situation.

The consequences

Mark quickly realized the true detriment of the situation, like a domino effect.

Without access to his Google accounts, he lost his:

📩 Gmail email

👥 Contact list

📷 Photos on Google Photos

🎶 Music

📱 Phone number and carrier with Google Fi

🔏 Security codes for other Internet sites

👨‍💻 Most of his digital life …

“The more eggs you have in one basket, the more likely the basket is to break.”

mark, new york times

This everyday family man got locked out of most of his digital life that he’d acquired for over a decade.

Think about how this affects his personal life, family, job, career and more. All the information is intertwined and traces back to each and every Google product.

As such a loyal Google customer, you’d think the company would have at least looked into his case and reinstated all his accounts. After all, he did nothing wrong and was merely at the fate of an algorithm.

From account blockage to police investigation

In both cases, their “violation” against Google’s policies turned into a police investigation, at first without their knowledge. However, both were dismissed after a simple explanation. It was clearly an instance where they got caught under a false trap.

However, even after the police got involved and both cases were proven innocent, Google was not willing to re-activate their accounts or return their data. Both individuals, who for years have relied heavily on Google’s applications, were punished by a big tech corporation for something they were not guilty of.

Story takeaway’s

Nextcloud has written about this in the past, and now that it’s hit mainstream news, it’s even more relevant and a critical call-to-action than ever before.

1) Don’t take privacy for granted

Using Google Photos for instance is very simple for the everyday user, but unfortunately you’ll pay the price in privacy. And this can have consequences, even if you think you have “nothing to hide.”

“I knew that these companies were watching and that privacy is not what we would hope it to be… I haven’t done anything wrong.”

Mark; new york times

It’s important to come to the realization that we live in a world where even your most private parts of life could become public and be used against you, at no fault of your own, and have dire consequences.

2) Big tech does not care about you

As seen in this story, even after such a highly publicized event, Google to this day has not rightly owned up to its faults and downfalls. Surveilling thousands of accounts with the intention of protecting children against exploitation is justified, however when the system fails there should be alternative procedures in place. Google does not return accounts even after a case was proven innocent, even for being a loyal customer, or for any other matter. Why? They are more concerned about following government regulations and making money. Truth is, the individual is not protected.

“Companies need a ‘robust process’ for clearing and reinstating innocent people who are mistakenly flagged.”

Ms. Klonick, law professor at St. John’s University; new york times

3) Never put all your eggs in one basket

For the victims of this case, both used Google products and services for the better half of their daily lives. To do that with any company is never wise, as you can never predict the consequences of what could happen. Read more here.

Do you really want to worry about what you save on your not-so-private photo album? Is it worth the possibility of wrongly getting turned into the authorities? How about losing all your data for good?

There’s a lot of wrongful and unfair play currently happening at Google and I’m sure you don’t want to get on the wrong end of the stick. Turns out, it really can happen to me and you.

Nextcloud and Mattermost are officially integrated – meaning you can now use both platforms together to share files securely and collaborate more efficiently.

The integration makes it possible to share Nextcloud Files to a specific channel in Mattermost. Simply upload a file directly to a channel or send a shared link to collaborate with colleagues, friends, or family.

Nextcloud is a popular collaboration platform and bringing our two platforms closer will give a productivity boost to teams in a range of use cases.

We aim to satisfy all our customers needs, so when Mattermost had an influx of its customers using Nextcloud, we knew we needed to join forces to provide a stronger user experience.

What is Mattermost?

Mattermost is an open source, self-hostable online chat service with file sharing and search. Their platform is often used for developer collaboration and includes channels, playbooks, and boards among other tools, plugins, and of course integrations.

Just like Nextcloud, Mattermost attracts a large community of contributers due to our similar missions for providing secure, on-premises platforms for collaboration.

Mattermost is a versatile player in the collaborative chat world, with a variety of customers seeing integration between the platforms. Our shared values of open source, trusted, self-hosted technology make an integration an obvious move.

Use cases

This integration can be used in many ways to improve workflows and simply make it easier if you have a team or customers that uses both platforms.

For instance, say you are planning a company event like a picnic. You are chatting in your team’s Mattermost channel and talk about the details. A colleague has last year’s staff dietary restriction’s document stored in her Nextcloud and wants to share it in the same channel for sake of simplicity and convenience. All she has to do is install and setup the Nextcloud-Mattermost integration, and it’s as easy as a few clicks.

How to setup the integration

First, you need to install the Nextcloud-Mattermost integration. You can find and install the integration app directly in Nextcloud’s app settings.

Now in your Nextcloud instance, go to Files and select one or more files you would like to share directly to Mattermost. Then click “Actions” or the 3-dots icon and you should see an option to “Send to Mattermost.”

Click on “Send to Mattermost” and since it’s the first time, you will have to go through a few simple steps to connect, login, and authorize Mattermost.

1) First, click on “Connect” (to Mattermost).

2) Next, login to your Mattermost account or create a new account in the pop-up window.

3) Then, click “Allow” to authorize the Nextcloud integration app to connect to your Mattermost account.

That’s it! You’ve now synced accounts and are permitted to send files from Nextcloud to Mattermost.

Now in the new pop-up window, you will have several options available.

  1. Choose the channel you want to send the file to
  2. Decide whether you want to upload file(s) or use a public link with the option to view only or edit
  3. You can also enable setting an expiration date and/or a link password.
  4. In addition, you can add a comment.
  5. Finally, click “Send link” and you should see it in your Mattermost channel.

That’s it! You’ve sent your first file from Nextcloud to Mattermost.

Now anytime after this initial setup, it will be very simple to share your Nextcloud Files through Mattermost.

We hope you enjoy and make use of this integration, so you can speed up your productivity and instill smooth workfows, all the while using the collaboration platforms you choose and love.

So, if you’re a Mattermost user or just want to try it out, definitely go to the Nextcloud App Store and get this integration today!
